Optical pigtails
Optical Pigtail is a short length of optical fiber cable with a connector at one end of the segment. The term "pigtail" is used due to its visual resemblance to a pig's tail.
The primary purpose of pigtails is to terminate optical cables when connecting or replacing telecommunications equipment. The free end is connected to a corresponding cable through fusion splicing or by using an optical coupler.
Types of Pigtails:
• Pigtails are categorized into single-mode and multi-mode types. Single-mode pigtails differ from multi-mode ones in having a smaller core diameter and no dispersion between fibers since they contain only one core. Multi-mode pigtails are designed for signal transmission using various modes and can have a larger core diameter.
• Pigtails are manufactured with various connector types, including SC, FC, LC, ST, MT-RJ, MU, and E2000.
• All pigtails have a 125-micrometer outer diameter for their protective coating. However, the core diameter of the fibers differs, with multi-mode pigtails generally having a larger core diameter, typically 50 micrometers.
• The length of pigtails typically ranges from 0.5 to 1.5 meters, depending on specific needs and usage scenarios.
• Connector polishing is categorized into two types:
UPC polishing ensures high physical contact between connectors, reducing signal loss and improving connection efficiency.
APC polished connectors have an angled end-face to reduce internal signal reflections and increase reflection tolerance.
